Autistic Adults

People with autism usually see a reduction of the severity as they grow older. Therefore as an adult diagnosed with autism, you'll find that many still live productive lives with regular jobs, and even self employment in some cases.

It's been noted that many do marry but it's been said that such marriages have a higher chance of resulting in divorce. This is based on assumption at this stage and I've yet to see any scientific data to back this statement. Some jobs given to those with autism result in high supervision by professionals who were trained to work with people with disabilities.

When an autistic individual reaches the age of 21, the care now falls solely on the family of the person with the disorder. The family will now be responsible for helping the individual find a place to live, employment based on their skills, along with further support to aid in their overall mental growth.

In some autistic adults you'll find that a small percentage (10%) may have a strong ability in a given area of study. The most common being computer programming and mathematical skills. It's important to note this skill or ability is not something specific to autism, but is generally regarded to be found in about 10% of those diagnosed with the disorder and approximately 1% of those without the disorder.
